In Phil Everly's obituary, he was quoted as having said that when the Beatles came around, it seemed that nothing that came before seemed to matter any more, and he was completely right.
I suppose that with each generation it's a clean slate.
Already in the late 70s when the disco era came around, kids growing up around that genre had no interest in the 'listening' music of the 60s and 70s with its great melodies, lyrics, guitar solos etc....
Only those will real musical inclinations occasionally look back in time - the others just go with the flavor of the day.
