This info is available all over the internet, but in a nutshell, the Beatles set up Apple Corp. in 1967 to avoid losing 85%+ of their income to the Inland Revenue (ie the taxman). It was set up as what we would now call a multimedia company, with a record label, film division, tailor, retail store, hairdresser, and other offshoots. It all became too unwieldy and eventually was whittled down to the record label, which apart from the Beatles also had successes with James Taylor, Badfinger, and Mary Hopkin (among others).
